Wholewheat Pita Bread

Wholewheat Pita Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups wholewheat flour
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbs Honey
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbs oil
  • 1 1/3 to 1 1/2 cups water
  • Flour for dusting

Method

Take 1 cup of lukewarm water in a bowl.

Add 1 tsp sugar, 1 tbs honey and 1 tsp instant yeast. Allow to rest for 10 mins.

In a large bowl, take 3 cups wholewheat flour, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp baking powder. Mix well.

Make a well in the centre and pour in the Yeast mix. Add 2 tbs Olive oil. Combine using a spatula.

Once everything is well combined, knead for 10-12 minutes. First, the dough will be very sticky, as we keep kneading it will become non-sticky and smooth.

Transfer to a greased bowl. Apple oil all over the surface of the dough.

Cover and rest for 1.5 to 2 hours or until doubled in size.

Deflate the dough and knead lightly.

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.

Shape each portion into a ball. Cover the remaining ones while shaping.

Dust the surface with some flour. Roll each portion into an even 5-6 inches round pitas. It should be slightly thicker than chapati.

Cover with a clean cloth and rest for 10 mins.

Heat a pan in high heat.

Place a pita and cook for 10 seconds. Once bubble starts appearing, flip and cook for 10 seconds.

Cover with a lid and cook for 40-50 seconds. The pita will puff up. Remove the lid. Flip and cook for 10 seconds.

Remove from pan. Repeat the same with remaining rolled pitas.

If the pita is not puffing, gently press with a spatula. It will puff up easily.

We can serve this yummy pitas with hummus or stuff the pita pockets with tuna, chicken or your favourite veggies.

Please note:

The pita should be of even thickness otherwise it might not puff up.
